The brand name "Kikusui" originated from a Noh song "Kikujidou", written for the thirteenth volumes (Ryouma-shinsou) of "Taiheiki". In one of its verses, it tells a story which goes, "Once upon a time, a subject of 'Buntei' the emperor of Wei, was given an order to go into the mountains in quest for the fountain of youth. There, the subject meets a mountain hermit whose age was no less than 700 years old. The hermit turned out to be 'Jidou' who served for king 'Keiou' of Zhou 700 years ago. He was banished to this mountain for infuriating the king and ever since, has been transcribing onto the leaf of chrysanthemum, the sutra from the pillow which was granted parting gift, drinking its dews allowing him to live as long as he has..." That is, that the water (sui) of chrysanthemum (kiku) brings about perpetual youth and longevity. From this, brand name of "Kikusui" was introduced.
During the Second World War, "Kikusui" was used as the name of the special attack crops as well as a symbol of loyalty and patriotism. Moreover, it has become to be known many people as the family crest of Okusukou clan, but the name "Kikusui" finds its roots in Noh song, registered as a trademark in the Meiji era 1910. |
